Warner Bros. Discovery Aug. 7 reported that the home entertainment release of Dune: Part Two helped increase theatrical content revenue 19% in the second quarter ended June 30, along with box office carryover revenue from Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, which was released at the end of March.
Dune: Part Two, which generated $711.8 million at the global box office, was released into digital retail channels on April 16 and on disc May 14.
Overall studios revenue dropped 6% to $2.45 billion from $2.58 billion in the previous-year period. Operating income dropped 31% to $210 million from income of $306 million last year.
In the quarter, TV revenue declined 27%, driven by the timing of initial telecast productions as well as lower licensing sales. Games revenue declined 41% due to the weak performance of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, compared to the strong performance of Hogwarts Legacy in the prior year.
Studios’ costs of revenue decreased 3%, primarily driven by a 35% decline in TV content expense, partially offset by a 38% increase in theatrical content expense.
Another major theatrical release in the quarter was Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which generated $172.7 million at the global box office.
