Retail sales of Lionsgate movies and TV programming dropped 40% to $161.8 million in the second quarter of fiscal-year 2025 (ended Sept. 30), from revenue of $266.3 million in the prior-year period, according to a regulatory filing.
The Santa Monica, CA-based studio/distributor saw sales of proprietary and third-party movies drop 30% to $127 million, which included $114.5 million in digital transactions and $12.5 million in packaged media. That compared with $165.7 million in digital transactions and $16.1 million in discs in the previous-year period.
TV program retail sales plummeted almost 60% to $34.8 million from $84.2 million, which included $34.3 million in digital transactions and $500,000 in packaged media. That compared with $84.2 million in digital transactions and $300,000 in discs last year.
Lionsgate attributed the home entertainment decline due to a 39% revenue decrease to $78.4 million from $126.8 million for Lionsgate original releases, in particular to comparisons with prior-year theatrical slate titles, which included John Wick: Chapter 4 and Jesus Revolution, among others.
The decrease in digital media revenue was also due to a $8.2 million revenue decrease to $48.6 million from $55 million in the company’s acquired library titles.
Regardless, home entertainment again dwarfed theatrical, which topped $20 million in revenue, down about 29% from $28.2 million in the prior-year period.
