Pablo Larraín’s screen portrait “Maria” about the world-famous opera singer, played by Angelina Jolie, can now also be experienced in home entertainment after its cinema release.
Maria Callas is considered the greatest opera singer of her time. “Maria” tells the diva’s story through her own eyes as she relives her turbulent, beautiful, and tragic life shortly before her death in Paris in 1977.

“Maria” will be released by StudioCanal from June 6, 2025 as a download for purchase and from June 19, 2025 on Blu-ray, DVD and as Video on demand to rent.

The whole thing is a biographical film drama from 2024 that illuminates the last seven days in the life of opera legend Maria Callas.
The film was directed by Larraín for the Cinema directed by Steven Knight, and is the third work in Larraín’s trilogy about iconic women of the 20th century, after “Jackie” (2016) and “Spencer” (2021).
Angelina Jolie portrays Maria Callas in a highly acclaimed performance as an actress, which has already been nominated for a Golden Globe.

plot
The story takes place in September 1977 in Paris, where Maria Callas has withdrawn to her apartment. She struggles with health problems and drug addiction while trying to plan a comeback.
Flashbacks and hallucinations lead her through formative moments in her life: her relationship with Aristotle Onassis, her difficult childhood and her career as an opera diva.
The film ends tragically with her death after a final triumphant performance of “Vissi d’arte,” which symbolizes her inner peace.
Implementation
Larraín stages Callas’s life as a blend of reality and psychological reflection. The opulent flashbacks and the musical accompaniment—a combination of Jolie’s voice and original recordings—create an intense atmosphere.
The film addresses the duality between the public figure “La Callas” and the private Maria, who lived in solitude.

The film premiered at the 2024 Venice International Film Festival, where it received an eight-minute standing ovation.
Critics particularly praised Jolie’s performance, while some found the film’s dramatic elements over the top. The film received a positive rating of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, while Metacritic gave it a score of 62/100.

“Maria” was initially shown in select US theaters and later released on Netflix. The film opened in Germany in February 2025.
