Comcast/NBCUniversal July 22 reported second quarter revenue of $302 million from its “other” business studio segment, which was down 15% from revenue of $354 million in the prior-year period.
The studio’s “other” business segment consists primarily of the sale of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment’s physical and digital home entertainment products, as well as the production and licensing of live stage plays and the distribution of content produced by third parties.
Overall, studio operating income plunged 51% to $124 million on revenue of $2.25 billion, compared with operating income of $255 million on revenue of more than $3 billion in the previous-year period.
Studio revenue decreased primarily due to lower theatrical revenue and content licensing revenue. Theatrical revenue decreased primarily due to higher revenue from the volume and strength of theatrical releases in the prior year period, including The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Fast X. Content licensing revenue declined primarily due to the timing of when content was made available by our television studios.
The studio’s top-grossing movies in the Q2 fiscal period this year included The Fall Guy, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Abigail.
