The 12 Best Dog Sofa Beds

The 12 Best Dog Sofa Beds

They might look like miniature couches, but these cute little sofas are actually made for dogs! Dog sofa beds come in a variety of styles to enhance your home decor while providing a comfortable place for your dog to unwind.

When researching the best dog sofa beds, we sought the guidance of Dr. Gail S. Wolfe, DVM, of Okemos, Michigan’s Bennett Road Animal Clinic, who told The Spruce Pets, “A dog bed should be large enough for the dog to fit into without hanging over it. It should be well constructed so it would be difficult for the dog to destroy, and all materials should be non-toxic.”

What We Like

  • Provides support, comfort, and temperature regulation capabilities

  • Certified to be free of known toxins

  • Option to personalize with pet’s name

The Orvis RecoveryZone Couch Dog Bed provides three sides of padded cushioning in addition to a supportive base made with dual-layer foam inside—along with temperature-regulating features, a water-resistant liner, and a machine-washable cover. It’s all backed by the company’s 100 percent customer satisfaction guarantee. Also, the RecoveryZone beds are manufactured in the United States and certified by the Sustainable Furnishings Council (Certi-PUR) to be free of ozone-depleting chemicals like formaldehyde, lead, and phthalates.

The overall dimensions of each bed size (listed below) are inclusive of the sleeping surface and the bolstered sides—so for example, the large size is 45 inches by 32 inches with a sleeping surface of 32 inches by 24 inches. We recommend checking both measurements to guide you toward the bed that will work best for your dog.  Regardless of size, the beds have a minimum height of 5 inches which might be intimidating for very small dogs.

What We Like

  • Luxurious, temperature-regulating faux fur top cover

  • Plastic-coated waterproof slipcover

  • Bolster provides comfortable head and neck support

  • Removable covers are machine-washable

The shape of the Nap Crate Dog Mat from Best Friends by Sheri is like a sofa on top of your sofa customized to provide comfort and support for a dog. Available in three sizes, this cozy dog mat has a luxurious temperature-regulating shag top cover and a plastic-coated slipcover designed to prevent messes and spills from seeping into the foam base—both of which are machine-washable. There’s also a comfortable bolster on the backside to provide support for your dog’s head and neck. Additionally, the small size can fit inside a standard 22-inch crate.

While the faux fur is undoubtedly cozy, the waterproof slipcover makes a noticeable “crinkly” noise that some dogs might find disruptive or downright unappealing. The base does provide good support, though perhaps a bit too firm for some pups. Nevertheless, pet owners will appreciate the sturdy padding and easy-to-clean, removable covers.

What to Look For in a Dog Sofa Bed

Naturally, dog sofa beds are often chosen because they’re cute, and you’ll want to find one that matches your home’s decor. There is a wide range of bed styles to choose from, including everything from plain options in neutral colors to luxe velvet models in striking hues. You’ll also want to keep in mind size, surface fabric, and cushion materials when shopping so you can find the best dog sofa bed for your pup.

Size

You’ll want to carefully check the dimensions of the sofa bed, as well as its weight limit, and measure your dog to ensure it will be a comfortable fit for your dog, especially if they like to stretch out as they sleep—you want one with ample room for them to spread out. To find your dog’s length, have them stand up on all four legs, then measure them lengthwise from the tip of their nose to the base of their tail, then add at least 6 to 12 inches to this measurement to get your ideal length dimension. For the width of your bed, measure your standing dog from the widest point on one shoulder to the widest point on the other, then add the same 6 to 12 inches for the total width dimension.

Material

To create the comfiest nest possible for your pup, it’s important to choose a bed constructed of high-quality materials. Aside from having a durable cover with a cozy feel, the inner materials of the bed should be sturdy enough to support your dog’s weight and spinal alignment while remaining soft enough for rest and slumber. Factors like being easy to clean, machine-washable, insulating, cooling, or moisture-wicking are all important to consider, too.

Surface Fabrics:

  • Polyester: An extremely popular textile derived from petroleum, it can take many forms—from long faux fur to a plush polyester blend—and be very insulating, which is great for cold nights. While some types of polyester-derived fabrics are easy to clean, faux fur and plush covers can be trickier and generally are not machine-washable.
  • Cotton Canvas: An excellent choice for washability, it is highly durable and great for all types of dog and puppy sofa beds. Usually machine-washable, this fabric can be damaged if the water temperature is set too high, so read labels carefully and always use the mildest chemical-free laundry detergent you can find.
  • Microfiber: Known as a durable, easy-to-clean, and comfortable fabric, microfiber is also moisture-wicking, super soft, and can stand up to tough stains, plus it’s usually inexpensive to boot.
  • Faux Leather: A synthetic substitute for the real thing, it’s cheaper than actual leather and often chosen for ethical reasons. Depending upon its specific constitution, it can be quite durable or may sometimes peel and crack over time, and some can be washed on a cold, gentle cycle and air-dried, while others may need to be spot-cleaned with mild soap and water.
  • Vinyl: With its name taken from the full term polyvinylchloride, or PVC, this material is also used as a substitute for leather. Created from chlorine and ethylene, it’s typically very durable and usually washable in cold water, on the gentlest cycle, with a mild detergent, and air-dried.
  • Microsuede: Made from polyester microfiber, it feels like suede leather but is water-resistant and generally more durable, pliable, and affordable than actual suede. Wash it gently in cold water and hang it on the line to dry.

Common Cushion Fillings:

  • Memory Foam: This type of sofa bed cushion cradles your dog in form-fitting coziness without sinking in so far they can’t get out—great for most dogs, especially those who need a little extra cushion due to joint, arthritis, or hip dysplasia problems. It can be wiped clean with a gentle solution of half water, half vinegar, and air dried, but usually shouldn’t be machine-washed.
  • Shredded Memory Foam: This is even cushier than the original memory foam, as shredded-up memory foam is more flexible for a customizable comfort zone. it also shouldn’t be machine-washed, but read your label as care for this type of cushion can vary.
  • Polyester Fiberfill (aka Polyfill): This is basically shredded polyester which is conveniently hypoallergenic, soft, pliable, and dense. It’s a little bit like down but more affordable, and you can toss it in the washing machine on cold or warm on the gentle cycle and dry on medium heat without dryer sheets.
  • Gel Foam: Like traditional memory foam with gel added for a cooling effect, it’s an ideal material for warm climates, and you can wipe it down with a half detergent, half water spray, and air dry. Machine washing is not recommended for most varieties of gel foam.

FAQ

  • Dogs scratch at their beds for several reasons, including an instinctual trait, passed down from wild ancestors, learned behavior from early life with their mothers, territorial marking, boredom and anxiety, and previous trauma such as abuse and neglect. Providing your dog with plenty of exercise, attention, food, water, potty breaks, and a variety of high-quality toys can help alleviate this. Anxiety wraps or products like “thunder shirts” and ensuring a warm, patient, and safe environment for them, in addition to bringing their bed closer to yours during sleeping hours, may also help alleviate this kind of stress.

Finally, trimming your dog’s nails can cut down on destructive scratching, while purchasing a sturdy dog bed (or one that comes with a durable, replaceable cover) can usually keep it intact longer than cheaper varieties. Experimenting with different bedding textures and fabrics may prove useful too, as some dogs can be destructive to certain types of beds but not others.

  • It’s best to vacuum its surface first to remove any excess fur or dirt. If possible, remove its cover and wash it separately—in some cases, the cover is all you’ll need to wash. Carefully check labels to establish whether the bed is machine washable or not. If so, use pet-safe detergent only (no fabric softener or dryer sheets). Always use the hottest setting when washing (unless otherwise specified), to ensure lingering bacteria are killed in the wash.

If it’s not machine washable, hand washing is in order—but if this isn’t possible, you can also scrub your dog bed’s surface with baking soda in a pinch to remove odors. Spot-cleaning with soapy water or an enzyme cleaner can help remove stains. No matter how you choose to wash your dog’s bed, always be sure to give it an extra rinse to get all detergent and cleaning chemicals out of the fabric.

Why Trust The Spruce Pets?

This article was researched and written by KJ Callihan, a writer for The Spruce, who has owned both dogs and cats, worked in animal shelters where she helped socialize animals for adoption, and fostered animals of various kinds. She also writes for CNET, AAA Northeast magazine, and more.

A previous version was written by Camryn Rabideau, a freelance writer and product tester for The Spruce Pets who owns two Golden Retrievers. While researching products to include on this list, she considered factors such as each bed’s size, weight limit, step-up distance, and materials—after all, she knows firsthand that certain fabrics don’t hold up well against dog claws. She also looked at whether the bed or its cushion was easy to clean, as dog beds often get dirty with frequent use.

We spoke with Dr. Gail Sommers Wolfe, D.V.M., of her own private practice, Bennett Road Animal Clinic in Okemos, Michigan to advise on our product selection and what to look for.
