Transform Your Home With The Right Flooring

Choosing the perfect flooring for your home is no easy task. After all, your choice of flooring plays a huge role in the look and functionality of your home

Tiles generally are a popular pick these days. They’re long-lasting, a breeze to keep clean, and are available in a wide range of designs. But it’s not as simple as just handpicking any tiles. Without some solid forethought, you might end up with a look that doesn’t work with your home at all. So, read on as our experts help you make a sound decision that will lead to a beautifully harmonious interior design, all centred around your fabulous new flooring.

What are the things that you must consider while selecting tiles for your home?

Anjum Jung, executive director of Morph Interior Designs suggests:

Aesthetic and style: The flooring you choose should complement the overall theme of your home. Consider the existing design elements, such as wall colours, furniture, and decor. Tiles are available in a variety of colours and patterns. Tiles may now mimic the appearance and texture of natural materials such as wood, marble, and various types of natural stone, thanks to advances in digital printing technology. You should decide whether you want a modern, traditional, rustic, or minimalist appearance before selecting the flooring materials. In contrast to a farmhouse-style home, which can benefit from wood-look tiles or natural stone, a contemporary home might benefit from sleek, polished tiles;

Tile finishes: Before choosing the perfect tiles from an incredible selection, look for diverse finishes that can adorn your home in a distinctive style. There are many excellent options, including polished, matt, wooden, metallic, marble-tech, carving, and rustic finishes;

Size of the rooms: Different rooms have different requirements, and the flooring should be chosen accordingly. For instance, bathrooms and kitchens are frequently damp, so it’s crucial to use materials such as ceramic or porcelain tiles that are both water and slip-resistant. You may place a higher priority on warmth and comfort in bedrooms or living spaces, in which case carpet or hardwood flooring is a better choice. Think about the useful qualities of each material, such as its capacity to absorb sound, offer comfort underfoot, or increase energy efficiency.

Also, when you are choosing your flooring, keep in mind that the prices may vary depending on what kind and quality of material you opt for. Before you make your decision, it’s advisable to have a chat with an architect or interior designer.

Suggesting a few more things that one must consider while choosing the flooring, Krsnaa Mehta, founder and design director, India Circus, says:

Durability and maintenance: Choose flooring materials that are durable and suitable for the specific area. High-traffic areas such as entryways, kitchens, and living rooms may require materials such as ceramic or porcelain tiles, natural stone, or hardwood floors. Consider the maintenance requirements of different materials and choose ones that align with your lifestyle. Some materials may require regular sealing, polishing, or special cleaning methods;

Budget: Establish a budget for your flooring project and consider the price of the supplies, the labour, and any other costs such as underlayment or subfloor preparation. To strike a balance between quality, affordability, and longevity, compare the costs of various tile varieties and building materials. Remember that better materials frequently last longer and could end up saving you money over time by requiring less upkeep or replacement;

Sustainability: Shop for items created using recyclable or biodegradable materials. Think about possibilities that include bamboo, cork, salvaged wood, or recycled-material tiles. To confirm that the products you are contemplating comply with environmental requirements, you should also investigate the manufacturing procedures and certifications of such products.

When you’re choosing the perfect tiles for your home, you might not think much about how they’re being installed. And surprisingly, even today, a lot of people still use cement or low-grade adhesives, which create problems such as a knocking sound, unlevelled tiles, tile cracking and in some cases, even tiles falling off.

Thus, when it comes to installing tiles, the quality of the adhesive is paramount. This is important as it ensures a strong bond between the tiles and the floor and determines the longevity, performance and aesthetics of your flooring. “Modern adhesives are known to withstand stress caused due to changing weather and higher abrasion and hence, are more durable than conventional cement bonding. Moisture can pose a significant risk to flooring, causing tiles to loosen or crack. By using a tile adhesive, one can mitigate such issues and ensure flooring remains intact, even in areas prone to water exposure, such as bathrooms or kitchens,” says Huzefa Kanchwala, senior vice president, Pidilite Roff.

Meanwhile, before starting any flooring work, it’s crucial to plan ahead and consider all the necessary preparations. This entails ensuring that all subterranean plumbing, electrical work and other infrastructure requirements are finished in advance. It is advisable to consult architects and interior designers about the same. “It is important that all necessary underground electrical work is completed before starting the flooring installation. Prioritising this will ensure safety, accessibility, efficiency and future flexibility for any electrical needs within your home,” concludes Mehta.
