New Year’s Resolutions That Work For Your Home AND Your Life
Home improvement is one of the most popular New Year’s Resolutions, and like most resolutions, you won’t get very far if you don’t have a plan. As home inspectors, we have a unique view of people’s homes, ostensibly when they’re trying to put their best foot forward. So if a home sale, or any kind of home improvement is on your list in 2025, we put together some New Year’s Resolutions for your home. Interestingly, they work pretty well for other areas of your life, too.
Declutter
Decluttering is probably one of the most common goals of all, at any time of year. It’s also one of the hardest projects to start and to maintain. But we’re talking about a different type of clutter here. We’re talking about the clutter that builds up on your roof and in your gutters. We don’t have to do piles of “Keep, Donate, Trash,” with this clutter, this is a job that just needs maintaining. Or you end up with situations like in the video, where the leaves and debris have built up over time and ended up causing long-term damage.
Take Care of Problems That Have Been Building Up Over Time
Like the leaves on the roof, some problems develop over time, and that’s true with these conducive conditions for wood-destroying insects (like termites) as well. The situation that Inspector Brian finds in the video, with several conditions combining to create an environment where termites have been allowed to access the home and cause damage has clearly happened over some time.
The lesson here is that with more regular maintenance, and taking preventative steps like spraying for termites, and addressing some of these conducive conditions, this homeowner could have avoided a significant amount of damage and expense. I feel like there’s a pretty obvious comparison we could draw to our general health here, am I right?
Fix the Obvious Stuff
Sometimes it’s the most glaring problems at home that just never get fixed. We just keep stepping over that broken stair, and allowing that busted sprinkler head to flood the yard every time we water. Make 2025 the year you fix the obvious stuff! Change the bulb that’s been out since before the pandemic. Fix those broken boards on the fence you’ve been meaning to change out for years. And get up in the attic and have a look around. There’s lots of important stuff up there that needs a little maintenance now and then that you should check out.
All the best to you this New Year! If you have questions about your home maintenance or energy efficiency, the best way to kick off the new year with a clean slate is with a home maintenance home inspection.
